High Field Open MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most advanced diagnostic imaging procedure today. It is also one of the safest and most comfortable imaging techniques. MRI creates detailed images of internal bodily structures without the use of ionized radiation (x-rays). It produces these detailed images through a powerful electromagnet, radiowaves and a computer to generate images of the soft tissue of the body. MRI is more sensitive than other imaging techniques in the detection and characterization of various diseases such as:

  • Brain tumors, strokes, and chronic disorders of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis, among others.
  • Spinal and joint problems. MRI is used to diagnose sport-related injuries. The images detect very small tears and injuries to ligaments, tendons and muscles.
  • Functional disorders in organs of the chest and abdomen, including lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen and pancreas.
  • Disorders of male and female reproductive systems including pelvis, hips and bladder

UMIH is dedicated to patient-friendly environments from start to finish including the equipment we use. The Open MRI is an open architecture system, it is more spacious than closed MRI units, as they are open on all sides. The open gantry allows the patient to simply lie directly under the imaging scanner without moving through a tunnel. Open MRI is ideal for patients who suffer from claustrophobia and/or obesity. The exams take approximately 30 minutes and we provide music of your choice during your exam.

The High field Open MRI scanners at UMIH use advanced permanent magnet design and a unique coil technology to produce diagnostic-quality images at a level once possible only with high-field closed MRI units.
